The New Forest is the home of many rare and endangered species and is particularly renowned as one of the only locations where the Dartford Warbler can, frequently, be spotted. Burley Rails Cottage has both oak and beech woodland, together with a Douglas fir plantation, on its boundaries and these, together with Blackensford Brook about 400 metres away, provide for an amazing variety of birds.
Sit on the patio or on the veranda of Wilfs cabin and watch the Nuthatches and many other species on the feeders whilst, overhead, Buzzards wheel and wild Mandarin and Mallard ducks squabble on the lawn-side pond.
Listen to the early-morning drumming of the Great Spotted Woodpeckers and be lulled to sleep by talkative Tawny Owls.
The paddocks at Burley Rails Cottage are a favourite feeding ground for the rare and elusive Nightjar, whilst the stables provide an annual nesting site for visiting Swallows.
